Why Fast? Part 1

But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings, by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love (2 Cor. 6:4-6).

1. We fast in obedience to God’s Word.
2. We fast to humble ourselves before God and obtain His grace and power.
3. We fast to overcome temptations in areas that keep us from moving in God’s power.

Fasting is a tool deeply embedded in Scripture. Time and again you find that when Israel was in crisis they turned to God in fasting and prayer and God stretched forth His arm to save them. We see Jesus fasting before He began His ministry in the power of the Spirit. The Apostles fasted for breakthrough and direction. It is the way that we can “go low” so that God can lift us up, give us His direction, and release His supernatural power for us and for others through us.

Prayer:
Lord, you say that you give grace to the humble. As I humble myself in this season of fasting, I pray for Your grace to fill me. I pray for your anointing to break the yokes of oppression of (infirmity, depression, poverty…______________) over (me, my family, nation… _____________).
